The Idiot

Save the Date! Special Preview of THE IDIOT

MAY 23rd : 3pm :  @ Beyond Baroque

The Idiot is Fyodor Dostoyevsky's 1868 novel which tells the story of Prince Lev Nikolayevich Myshkin who, after a long absence, returns to Russia from Switzerland where he sought treatment for his epilepsy. The story is primarily a tragic tale of the struggle for the love of a woman, Nastasya Filippovna, between Myshkin and Rogozhin, a dark and impassioned man that the Prince meets on the train to St. Petersburg. The Idiot is a classic tale of the conflict between good and evil: on one hand Prince Myshkin represents Dostoyevksy's attempt to portray a Christ-like "positively good man" which is sharply contrasted with not only the dark and roguish character of Rogozhin but also with the nature of Russian classist and divided society depicted in the novel.

Using Dostoevsky’s novel as the starting point, Rosanna Gamson adapts the novel in all its complexity for five actors (each playing a wide variety of characters ), with dolls, puppets, toys, and shadow-casting bringing to new theatrical life the hallucinatory, comic, and tragic story of the holy fool set in the social strata of 19th Century St. Petersburg.

STILL

And another lovely review of STILL at the NOW Festival:

"... brilliant technicians dancing out their deepest fears, longings and nocturnal impulses with virtuosity and finesse... Gamson's movement tonally shifts from lyrical adagios to fierce, almost violent cutting and twisting, limbs acting as propellers to change shapes and moods in an instant. The effect is a thrilling sensory experience, where movement, light and music come together to tell a story in a non-linear way, but with the understanding that the story indeed lives on, deep beneath the surface."

"...another impressive and already polished work... The movement, the lighting, the effortless-seeming flow and the quality of veiled mystery are all beautifully handled."

READ THE WHOLE REVIEW HERE:  Mark Swed, LA Times

"In Rosanna Gamson/World Wide's STILL, four men and two women create an intricately beautiful dance of the psyche as light shifts, shadows move, and bodies intertwine with exquisite sophistication. ...a very sensual and quite unforgettable experience."

"...a visually exciting piece of intricately woven dance moving in and out of stunning light and shadow,  creating mystery and intrigue as the artists whirl, connect and separate, creating a piece that is sometimes ethereal, sometimes kinetic."
